AMADOR BRANCH - WHO WE ARE

Branch History:

We are the AAUW Amador, California Branch, chartered in the spring of 1969, and are an active group of women with diverse interests and talents. Opportunities abound for members to play an active roll in the many facets of our Branch: joining an interest group, working on programs, serving on the home tour or scholarship committees, or accepting a position on the board.

In our fifth decade, we face both challenges and opportunities. In spite of the current economy, our Branch continues to fund college and Tech Trek scholarships for local women and girls, as well as contributing to the Legal Advocacy and AAUW Funds (Educational Foundation). Scholarships are one of the most important aspects of our efforts. Scholarships are funded by our Annual Home Tour, which was first held in 1972. Planning is now underway for the 2012 Home Tour, scheduled for April 21, 2012, in Ione.

Our Branch is committed to bringing together graduates of various institutions to promote educational equity for all women and girls. Membership is open to all those with an associate, baccalaureate, or higher degree and are interested in making a positive impact on the lives of women and girls. We invite you to join us. Go to the Membership page and click on Application.

Since 1881, the American Association of University Women has been the nation's leading voice promoting education and equity for women and girls. In 1885, a group of AAUW members conducted a survey that disproved the popular theory that higher education was detrimental to women's health. That first study established AAUW's commitment to cutting-edge research relevant to the struggle for gender equity in school and in society. Today, AAUW research draws national attention to issues of gender equity and education; it influences policy-makers as well as educators, parents, and students; and most importantly, serves as a catalyst for action.
